Questions for Jesus: What Happens When Jesus Speaks into Our Deepest Desires?
As coaches, we love inviting our clients to imagine their future self. We sit with them as they dream about a new way of living, a shift in their habits, or a completely rewritten identity. It is a beautiful privilege to hold space for someone as they slowly rewrite their story in a safe, curious environment.
But at times, we can treat coaching like a left-brain checklist: What are the goals? What are the strategic steps? What is the timeline? While those structures are helpful, logic alone rarely changes a human heart. Willpower cannot heal a deep, unspoken fear, or engage the heart and the relational right brain. This is the part of us that feels emotion, senses safety, and captures deep intuition. It cares about connection. When we bring this relational space into our coaching, we often use tools like metaphor and image or listening to and observing client’s emotions to explore deep desires or longings.
In this safe place, we can not only offer space for a client to sort internal thoughts or the loud, distracting voices of their daily life, but we can also actively pause to listen to the voice of Jesus. An encounter with Jesus can touch a client in their deepest longings and desires. In that quiet moment of perfect love and safety, His voice meets them right where they feel it most. This voice of Jesus doesn’t just help them rewrite their narrative—it can help rewire how they feel, breathe, and experience their story from the inside out. A client may express a desire for affirmation, for safety, or to work alongside God. In partnership with the client, we craft a question that allows Jesus to speak directly a word of affirmation, a way He wants the client to feel safe, or how He is excited to work alongside the client.
However, we cannot invite others into a space we have not entered ourselves. To lead clients into this profound depth, we as coaches can experience this relational connection firsthand, allowing Jesus to speak to and fill our own deep desires. If you want to grow in hearing the voice of Jesus addressing your deepest desires and to practice inviting others into this place, come to the Questions for Jesus Taster on November 3. We will explore how we hear Jesus’ voice and practice asking questions of Jesus and listening for ourselves and for others.
